What does LOLER stand for?
The acronym, LOLER, stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations.
Do I Need A LOLER Inspection?
Stated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), routine examinations should be carried out as part of the LOLER 1998 regulations. You have a legal responsibility to make sure that any lifts used at work or for passengers are maintained and are safe to use, so a LOLER inspection IS required.
Who Can Carry Out A LOLER Inspection?
As stated by the LOLER Approved Code of Practice & Guidance, an inspection must be carried out by a competent person. This person must have sufficient practical experience and technical knowledge, to be able to inspect and detect the lifting object for any defects and the severity of such.
The competent person must also be completely independent and neutral, to enable them to make an impartial assessment.
How Often Does A LOLER Inspection Need To Be Carried Out?
Any lifting equipment that is used to move people or all lifting accessories, need to be inspected every 6 months. All other lifting equipment should be inspected every 12 months.
